Uonderbois is a 6-episode series directed by Andrea De Sica and Giorgio Romano, based on an original story by Barbara Petronio which is framed by the popular legends of a unique place in the world: Naples. It is easy to be captivated by the beauty of this city, but only those who know how to see beyond appearances have access to all the magic and mystery hidden here.
The Uonderbois are five twelve-year-old boys, united by the fervent imagination of those born and raised in the streets of Naples and the belief that their idol, Uonderboi, a cross between the legendary figure of the Munaciello and a modern Robin Hood, roams the city.
The five inseparable friends must say goodbye because their landlady (La Vecchia) is about to sell their homes in exchange for a statuette of Diego Maradona. When the statuette is stolen by their idol, Tonino Uonderboi, the new Munaciello of Naples, the Uonderbois begin an adventure in search of a mysterious treasure in the underground city.
Guiding them on this journey is their knowledge of the city’s oldest secrets with the awareness that behind every legend there is always a pinch of truth. It is, after all, precisely on this border between reality and magic that Naples has balanced for millennia.
City locations included, in addition to Naples Underground, the Galleria Borbonica, the seafront and Palazzo degli Spiriti in Marechiaro, a 1st century BC Roman villa managed by the protected archaeological and environmental area of Pausilypon; plus, the Fontanelle cemetery, Palazzo Donn'Anna and the alleys of the historic city centre, including San Gregorio Armeno. Scenes were also shot at the archaeological museum.
The series also used locations in: Pozzuoli, the Flavian amphitheatre and lake Averno; and Bacoli, at the Roman-era archaeological area Piscina Mirabilis
Some sets were built in Rome.
The series stars Serena Rossi, Massimiliano Caiazzo, Junior Rodriguez, Melissa Caturano, Catello Buonocore, Christian Chiummariello, Gennaro Filippone, Giordana Marengo, Giovanni Esposito, Ernesto Mahieux, Daniele Rienzo, Francesco Di Leva, Ivana Lotito with the extraordinary participation of Nino D’Angelo.
