When Santa Claus (Alessandro Gassmann), gripped by existential crisis, suddenly disappears on vacation, his wife Margaret (Luisa Ranieri)—always ready to support (and tolerate) her husband Nicholas—has no choice but to roll up her sleeves and save the most special day of the year. It won't be an easy task, because the enterprising witch Sabrina (Caterina Murino), better known as “Befana”, and Saint Lucia (Valentina Romani) are determined to steal the spotlight and become the stars of the holiday season. Nicholas grapples with a Santa Claus Past (Diego Abatantuono) who tries to help him rediscover the magic of Christmas, while Margaret must contend with worried and disoriented elves, an incredulous psychologist (Angela Finocchiaro), and the principal (Michela Andreozzi) of her children's school, who is increasingly concerned about the children’s strange behaviour.
Natale senza Babbo, holiday comedy directed by Stefano Cipani, was filmed in Rome. Although it is a fantasy film, both screenwriter Michela Andreozzi (assisted by Filippo Macchiusi) and director Stefano Cipani were keen to give the story a touch of absolute realism. It tells the story of an ordinary man, Nicholas, with a wife and children, who is suddenly elected Santa Claus. The film shows highly evocative areas such as the Garbatella neighbourhood and piazza di Spagna, illuminated for the holidays by the renewed magic emanating from Santa Claus. Scenes were also filmed at the Tivoli thermal baths.
